The challenge

In Q2 of 2022, our Partner, one of the world’s leading logistics and transportation services, launched an urgent call for tenders to staff a major logistics centre at its primary airport hub. Due to the location’s stringent security, training and compliance requirements, procuring fully trained, qualified and vetted employees was, at best, a lengthy, time-consuming and costly process and, at worst, a severe disruption for its vital operations.

The solution

Prior to our Partner’s call for tenders, Gi Group had been supplying another important logistics group at the same airport. This client was, however, shifting away from the market, and its scale-down and projected closure meant that many of our skilled workers would become unemployed. Indeed, by 31 August 2022, 100 people had been laid off.

In response to the open call, Gi Group submitted an offer with a forecasted delivery of 150 employees. Upon our Partner’s initial commitment and approval of our proposal to recall the previously laid-off employees, our Onsite team undertook information sessions with each one of them and documented all the background checks and permits required for security access at the hub.

During the first week of October 2022, our Onsite team onboarded 40 employees; by the end of the year, we had onboarded 145. Ultimately, we were able to deploy at our Partner’s hub all of the 100 employees who had been laid off by the previous client at the end of August. We also recruited and hired 45 new workers, in addition to renting accommodation for them, translating their documents, and applying for and obtaining their security clearances and work permits.

As part of our comprehensive managed HR-services offer, we organised and conducted mandatory training on cyber security and dangerous goods transportation and ran on-site testing for workers at a new area on the airport apron.

The results

By leveraging our depth of expertise and agile Onsite model, Gi Group achieved exceptional results: our Partner declared that no prior service provider had ever come this close to its fulfilment goal, not to mention with such a high headcount.

The information sessions we held about transferring to our new Partner’s hub resulted in a 95% success rate.

With 190 Gi Group employees under contract at the hub at the end of 2023, in 2024, we made further gains in worker satisfaction by reducing daily working hours from 7 to 5, maintaining a sick leave rate of under 3%. As of 2025, our Partner relies exclusively on our Onsite team as the sole service provider at the hub.
